Media -Zero to Six
Well, after reading the article, I think my kids are watching too much television. I feel like I have done them an injustice. Now, how do I tell my eight year old that she can only watch 1 hour of television? She will probably have a fit. She definitley should be reading more. My oler two children did not watch as much television as she did and they do pick up books more often. I guess the findings are right on target. The more electronic media in your life, the less you do for yourself (read a book, go outside and play, etc...).

Are you referring to an article we have to read for class? Haven't read it...yet. Getting a kid away from TV is hard but one way you can involve more reading into "TV life' is by having the closed captioning on. I watch TV with closed captioning all the time and while I don't think there's any "scientific research" on it, I'd think it would help students with their spelling, etc. I had a friend in college who was from Japan and was a non-native english speaker. She used the closed captioning to help her learn English.
PS
Thanks for your dress comments. I ended up wearing a dress from the summer. I totally didnt think it would end up fitting me b/c I tend to gain weight in the winter...then again, I tend to gain weight over summer break too, so everything balanced out.
Long live soft pretzels and Cinnabons!!! :)
I thought a lot about how much the TV is "on" in our home. My husband keeps it on whether he's in the room or not. I think he's in the den and I start to talk to him but he's not there and the TV is blarring. I usually turn it off and he turns it on. We grew up in two completely different households. My parents did not allow me to watch random shows. We actually watched special programs together. Since I've been married, I had to adjust to his way way of leaving the TV on. I also am concerned now because my daughter has a TV in her room and she has not been reading like she use to before the TV and laptop took over. My son is either on his computer or watching TV. It seems that I'm the old ball who likes to read and sit in the living room without a TV. It's hard to change TV habits but it's worth a try.
We're all guilty of keeping the television on a lot more than we should... i turn it on as soon as i walk in the door for background noise...it's on all day even if i'm not in the same room... Hmmm... maybe that's why the tv in the living room kept blowing out :)
